The documentary “Barrigas”, signed by the Italian visual artist Angelo Ghidoni (aka Aghi), was born as part of an emergency project financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in Mozambique.

Presented at the beginning of October in the renowned Teatro-Scala in Maputo, at the same time as the photographic exhibition “O Corpo da Mãe”, the film presents the important role played by Italian cooperation in improving the living conditions of people affected by cyclones Idai and Kenneth, approximately 400,000 people, including the protagonists Rebeca, Mariazinha and Julieta.

The film is set in a Casa Mãe Espera in the Province of Manica: these structures, located near health centres, play a crucial role in increasing safe births, thus contributing to the reduction of maternal and child mortality. The documentary gave voice to the life stories of three women in the last days of their pregnancies.
