AICS and CIMA Foundation have signed the agreement for the initiative “Ready2Act: Improving coordination mechanisms and disaster preparedness capabilities in Mozambique” (AID: 012910/01/0) for an amount equal to 1,500,000.00 Euros.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening the warning system in Mozambique, through a process of technological transfer, training and institutional strengthening built with the INGD (Insituto Nacional de Gestão de Desastres, i.e. the Civil Protection system of Mozambique) and others actors involved in this area. The activity, led by the CIMA Foundation in partnership with the OSC WeWorld-GVC List and the strategic guidance of the Italian Civil Protection Department (DPC), will be divided into two components: the promotion of inter-institutional coordination mechanisms, at all levels, in the preparation and response to natural disasters and the strengthening of monitoring, forecasting and warning capabilities and the operational link with timely actions on the field.
In Mozambique, recurring weather and climate emergencies are the cause of great human suffering and an obstacle to the country’s economic growth. In a changing climate and rapidly evolving society, it is crucial to be able to anticipate, prepare for and respond to the negative impacts of extreme hydrometeorological events such as cyclones, floods and droughts. Mozambique is one of the first 30 countries included in the EW4ALL1 (Early Warning for All) initiative, launched in November 2022 by the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres during COP27 which aims to provide the entire population, including marginalized and vulnerable groups , equitable and effective access to Early Warning Systems (EWS) to improve preparedness and protection against natural disasters and emergencies, by the end of 2027.
“The Ready4Act initiative confirms AICS’s approach to disaster risk management in Africa, which since 2020 has focused on Anticipatory Action, a key tool for reducing the impact of extreme weather events on people, territories and productive assets , thanks to early warning systems” – comments Marco Riccardo Rusconi, Director of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation. “The effectiveness and sustainability of AICS interventions in partnership with CIMA Foundation, in the context of the early warning system and anticipatory actions, are ensured by the on-site training of scientific and technical experts from the Partner Countries as well as by the dissemination of data indispensable and easily usable for local communities of breeders and farmers to cope with and reduce the impacts of disasters by strengthening their adaptation and resilience capabilities. CIMA Foundation is a consolidated and qualified partner that has been operating for many years on projects financed by AICS and which allow the African continent to make progress in terms of disaster risk reduction”.
