In coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) and Italy’s Water Convention Focal Points, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) played an active role in Italy’s technical preparation for the 10th Meeting of the Parties (MoP10) of the UNECE Water Convention on transboundary waters and international lakes. MoP10 took place in Ljubljana from October 23-25, 2024.

Led by MASE Undersecretary Claudio Barbaro, the Italian delegation included officials from MASE, AICS, SOGESID, and ISPRA. AICS’s technical support was key to the success of the Italian delegation’s participation, contributing to the election of an Italian candidate to the Bureau of the Convention.

AICS advocates a programmatic approach to transboundary water resource management within Italian Cooperation’s development framework. This involves aligning project initiatives with the objectives and methods of the Water Convention. AICS also contributed as a presenting organization at a MoP10 side event, jointly organized by the Convention Secretariat, Finland’s Ministry of Environment, and the OECD. This session focused on exploring experiences and the potential of the Water-Food-Energy-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus. AICS presented its technical approaches, lessons learned, and upcoming initiatives in the water and environmental sectors, drawing from its extensive expertise.
