On March 24, 2025, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) will host a virtual training session in collaboration with the Interministerial Committee for Human Rights (CIDU). The focus of the session will be on the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR), presented by CIDU experts.
The UPR is a UN Human Rights Council mechanism that systematically reviews the human rights situation in all member states. This international process fosters dialogue, accountability, and progress in human rights promotion and protection worldwide.
On January 20, 2025, Italy underwent its fourth UPR cycle at the United Nations in Geneva. During the session, 123 countries provided 340 recommendations and observations on Italy’s human rights policies and commitments.
The training session will equip AICS personnel with the knowledge and tools to:
– Understand the UPR process and its role in advancing global human rights standards.
– Analyze the outcomes of the latest UPR cycles, focusing on countries where Italy is engaged in humanitarian aid and development programs.
– Strengthen AICS’s role in human rights promotion through cooperation projects in partner countries.
By deepening its understanding of human rights mechanisms, AICS reaffirms its commitment to integrating human rights principles into development cooperation, ensuring a more sustainable and inclusive impact in partner nations.
