Under the leadership of the Italian G7 Presidency, the Accountability Working Group (AWG) produced this year the G7 Apulia Progress Report 2024: Advancing Sustainable Development in Africa .

The annual Progress Report serves as a vital tool to ensure the transparency and credibility of decisions made by the Heads of State and Government of the G7 countries and the European Union. It details the progress made in implementing development and development-related commitments discussed at past G7 Summits. In addition, the accountability process facilitates internal policy coordination among G7 members, promotes institutional learning, and ultimately aims to ensure greater coherence and effectiveness in the Leaders’ decisions.

For 2024, the Italian Presidency selected Africa as the focus for the Report, recognising the continent’s significant potential for sustainable development and its crucial role as a partner in advancing progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Agenda 2063, and the Paris Agreement. The Presidency also introduced a gender equality lens as a key feature of the report, demonstrating a commitment to fostering a gender-transformative development approach.

By providing a comprehensive analysis of the progress made from 2015 to 2022 on G7 development and development-related commitments with a focus on Africa or one of its regions, the G7 Apulia Progress Report 2024 will be instrumental in informing the G7’s forthcoming cooperation strategies with African countries and regional organisations.
