The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC), the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), and CIMA Foundation, host a high-level side event on disaster resilience and early warning systems in Africa. Scheduled for Wednesday, November 13th, at 1:30 PM, this event has taken place at the Italian Pavilion during COP29 and aims to advance cooperation between Italy and Africa in disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, and the Africa Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Early Action System (AMHEWAS) Programme.

The collaboration between the African Union, Italy, and UNDRR represents a vital global initiative to enhance early warning systems across Africa. As climate change heightens the frequency of extreme weather events, African nations are increasingly vulnerable to natural disasters. Recognizing these urgent needs, the AU has emphasized the development of effective early warning systems to improve disaster preparedness.

Italy’s experience in risk management and civil protection provides valuable technical and financial support, which aids in building local capacities to mitigate the effects of natural calamities. Through the AMHEWAS Programme, a robust early warning and early action system was designed, uniting regional and local communities across Africa. This integrated approach ensures reliable access to critical data, enabling countries to respond swiftly to threats and enhance resilience against climate-related impacts. This side event underscores Italy’s commitment to international cooperation for disaster resilience, aligning with Italy’s Cooperation Priorities and Mattei Plan.
