The Bianca Pomeranzi Award has been developed to build a living legacy of an extraordinary contribution to the promotion of the rights and freedoms of womend and girls in the Italian, international and transnational context.
Bianca Maria Pomeranzi (1950-2023) has been a leading figure in the world of Italian development cooperation and of the feminist movement. Among her professional achievements there is the co-foundation of AIDOS (Italian Association of Women for Development), the work as Senior Gender Expert of the General Directorate for Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the direction of the Local Technical Unit (UTL ) of Dakar of the Italian Cooperation for Senegal and East Africa (2010-11), as well as the election as a member of the Committee for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) of the United Nations.
The Bianca Pomeranzi Prize aims to build a legacy in her area of activity with an internship opportunity in the transition period between academic studies and the first job experience. It is aimed at graduates in Sciences for Development Cooperation (LM81) who have written a thesis focused on feminist and gender policies and practices in the political, social, cultural, environmental and economic fields. The winning person will have the concrete possibility of carrying out a three-month internship at a major organization in the sector. For the first edition it will be Oxfam Italia / Gender Justice Area. The internship will be reimbursed thanks to the generous contribution of the RUT Foundation and the European Women’s Management Development Network / Rome chapter (EWMD Rome).
The Promoting Committee of the Bianca Pomeranzi Award is composed by Dr Elena Zambelli (Lancaster University) and Maria Rosa Cutrufelli, who developed the idea, and by AIDOS, Casa Internazionale delle Donne, Differenza Donna, Dipartimento di Scienze Politiche dell’Università Roma Tre / Dottorato di ricerca in Scienze Politiche – Curriculum Studi di Genere, EWMD Roma, Fondazione RUT and Oxfam Italia.
The initiative is sponsored by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS). “Bianca Pomeranzi has carried out a fundamental work to promote the key role that women, girls and girls play in the development of their communities,” the Deputy Technical Director of AICS, Leonardo Carmenati, says. “AICS has not hesitated in providing its patronage of the prize dedicated to her, confirming the commitment of the Italian Cooperation for gender equality and with the hope that this initiative will contribute to developing new skills thanks also to the contribution of the academic world and civil society organizations”. The Bianca Pomeranzi Award also has the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI).
